Police were called to control crowds of commuters at London Bridge station last night, as masses of people were holed up and angered by travel delays triggered by a person getting hit by a train just before peak commute time.
People on Twitter compared the treatment of commuters by station staff to a mass kettling — the technique used to control crowds — as transport staff closed doors and barriers to stop travellers entering the station. The ensuing crush outside some ticket barriers led some to leap over the gates to escape the growing wall of people.
Network Rail and Southern Rail UK both apologised for delays, and some people got some good photos to put on Twitter, so it all worked out OK. Apart from for the person who was hit in the first place.
